Our Holiday Tips
Stick to a Routine
Routine is one of the most important elements of Montessori education. While we value freedom and exploration within that routine, consistency is essential to your child’s development. Incorporating small daily tasks like picking out an outfit, brushing their teeth, making breakfast together, and reading before bed will ensure your little one doesn’t stray too far from their school routine. This will also make it easier when the first day back at school comes.
Make Meals Together
Involving your child in meal preparation is one of our favorite ways to strengthen their motor skills, teach them trial and error, and allow them to explore their independence. During the holidays, mealtime is a special way to bond with your family and appreciate your loved ones. Letting your child join in with simple tasks will frame their positive mindset around food and form unforgettable memories of holiday mealtimes.
Keep Their Space Organized
A major value of Montessori education is a neutral, organized space in which a child lives and learns. Holiday decorations are a fun household staple, but too many lights, colors, and items around the house can get overwhelming. Don’t go overboard with the decor, and make sure you and your child keep their room organized. This will ensure they know their room is a comfortable and safe space they can go to if they’re feeling overwhelmed.
Make Memories with Holiday Activities
Holiday activities are a great way to keep your child entertained over break while still teaching them Montessori principles. This could include crafts like making ornaments or garland to decorate the tree, which promotes creativity and fine-tunes their motor skills. You can also have them draw holiday cards to send to loved ones, which will polish their writing skills and give them a sense of independence.
Incorporate Outside Time
At Meadow Montessori, we believe in spending time outside as much as possible. Though it might be cold, bundling up and getting some fresh air is one of the best things you and your little one can do! Break up your day by visiting a park or taking a walk; this will allow your child to explore and play while strengthening their absorbent mind. These shared experiences will create positive connections in their brains and help them take in their environment.
