Montessori Materials for the Home that Every Family Should Have!
As parents, we all strive to create an environment that fosters our children’s growth, independence, and love for learning. And what better way to do that than by bringing the magic of Montessori into our very own homes?
We will explore the incredible benefits of incorporating Montessori materials into your home, transforming it into a haven of hands-on exploration and self-discovery. Our expert educators at Meadow Montessori have curated a list of essential materials that will empower your child’s learning journey, from practical life activities to sensory exploration.
Practical Life Materials
A core Montessori principle is to encourage independence in our little ones through the Four Planes of Development concept, and what better to help than teaching practical life skills in the home? Each plane corresponds with stages in life development; discover what type of independence is fostered!
Plane One
Ages: 0 through 6
Physical Independence
Plane Two
Ages: 7 through 12
Mental Independence
Plane Three
Ages: 13 through 18
Social Independence
Plane One
Ages: 18 through 24
Spiritual and Moral Independence
Essential Practical Life Materials
Pouring Materials
Help your child develop hand-eye coordination and concentration skills by providing small pitchers or watering cans for pouring water. Encourage them to pour water from one container to another, gradually increasing the difficulty by using different volumes or challenging them to pour without spilling. What’s awesome about these types of activities is that, with proper prep, there is zero mess!
Transferring Materials
Use materials like tongs, spoons, or tweezers to help your child practice transferring small objects from one container to another. Start with larger objects and gradually progress to smaller ones, promoting the development of their fine motor skills and hand dexterity.
Dressing Frames
Dressing frames allow children to practice essential clothing fastenings like buttons, zippers, and snaps. By providing different structures, your child can gradually master these skills, gaining confidence and independence in dressing themselves. Nothing boosts our children’s confidence like them being able to zip up their jackets or velcro fasten their shoes!

Sensorial Materials
Every human on this Earth experiences the world around them through their senses! So, of course, Montessori learning utilizes sensory materials to stimulate the senses and refine a child’s perception of the world. By engaging with sensorial materials, children learn to observe, compare, and classify objects based on their attributes, helping them make sense of their environment and foster a deeper understanding of the world.
Sensorial Materials for the Home
Color Tablets
Color tablets are popular in Montessori learning because they allow children to explore and differentiate colors. They come in sets with different shades, allowing children to match and sort the colors, developing their visual perception skills.
Meadow Montessori recommends setting up a color sorting activity using color tablets. Provide a variety of objects or pictures with different colors. Encourage your child to match the objects or images with the corresponding color tablets.
Sound Cylinders
Sound cylinders come in pairs, each pair producing a different sound. Children are encouraged to listen carefully and match the pairs based on sound. This material sharpens their listening skills and heightens their awareness of different sounds in their surroundings. Parents can also make these at home! Wrap a bottle or jars so children can’t see what’s inside and fill them with different items like pasta, cotton balls, salt, rice, and more. Help your child distinguish between soft and loud items!
Use sound cylinders to play a guessing game. Blindfold your child and make a sound with one of the cylinders. Encourage them to listen carefully and find the matching sound cylinder in a set.
Tactile Boards
Tactile boards offer a range of textures for children to explore through touch. They provide a hands-on experience with materials like sandpaper, fabric, or wood, helping children develop tactile discrimination and sensory awareness.
Create a texture scavenger hunt by hiding different objects with various textures around the house. Give your child a tactile board and challenge them to find things that match the surfaces on the board.
Geography & Cultural Materials
A deep understanding of geography and cultural studies contributes to a child’s development, empathy, and appreciation for diversity. By learning about different countries, cultures, and geographical features, children become aware of the interconnectedness of our world. This knowledge not only cultivates a sense of global citizenship but also reinforces essential values, such as respect, empathy, and cultural appreciation.
Geography & Cultural Activities
Cultural Exploration
Set up a cultural corner in your home using cultural artifact boxes. Encourage your child to explore the objects, ask questions, and engage in discussions about different cultures. Use books or videos to provide additional information about the traditions and customs represented by the artifacts.
While we encourage the limiting of screen time, Meadow Montessori recommends a wide variety of apps and websites to learn about cultures of the world, including but not limited to:
- National Geographic Kids – Learn about the world with fun and interactive games and reading!
- Roots & Shoots – The youth action program from the Jane Goodall Institute encourages kids to make a difference today!
- Touchable Earth – Learn about countries from around the world from the kids who live in them!
Geography Adventures
Use puzzle maps to embark on geography adventures with your child. Choose a continent or a specific country and explore its landmarks, people, and unique features. Encourage your child to find books or virtual resources that provide more information about these locations, deepening their knowledge and understanding.
Land and Water Form Exploration
Create hands-on experiences with land and water forms using sand or clay to recreate different geographical features. Let your child shape mountains, islands, and lakes, creating their miniature geography. Engage in conversations about how these landforms are created and their significance in different parts of the world.
