The Importance of the Third Year
As opposed to public school, Kindergarten is not the beginning of primary school. In Montessori teaching, kindergarten is referred to as “the third year” or “Leadership Year.” This year is essential in the development of Montessori skills and values including:
- Leadership skills are developed
- Self-learning is encouraged
- Curiosity is nurtured
- And more!
Greater Responsibility
The early childhood curriculum is a three-year cycle in which each step of a child’s development and learning provides a solid foundation for the next step. During the first-year, students are beginners, exploring and absorbing knowledge from their environment. The second-year students are more independent and comfortable in the classroom. In the third-year, students become the leaders in the classroom.
Learning in a Safe Environment
The Montessori classroom teaches children to work together, respect each other and themselves, and learn through experience. The children are free to explore on their own and will work in groups or independently as they see fit.
In our Montessori classroom, we offer freedom within limits, which creates a safe space for your child to grow into their own person with confidence and independence. Children learn how to control their environment by respecting others’ choices, even if those choices don’t align with their own. Being exposed at such an early age to these concepts of respect for self and others is integral in their development.
Continued Teaching of Knowledge-Seeking
Our curriculum inspires students to become lifelong learners who actively seek knowledge. Our Kindergartners continue to learn and are challenged through individualized instruction. No need to wait on others to catch up, no opportunity for boredom, and no teaching to a test. In our kindergarten program, there is no limit to learning!
Set Them Up for a Lifetime of Success
The Montessori philosophy teaches children to learn in a variety of ways and at their own pace, which can be difficult to do at school when students must conform to a curriculum that doesn’t always work for them.
Children who are used to taking responsibility for their own learning will be able to do so in the classroom as well as with peers and teachers. They’ll also know how much effort is required on their part and which learning strategies work best for them, preparing them for the next stage of their education.
Children who have been taught how to succeed in life tend to carry this attitude with them through adulthood—and we’ve all heard stories about how important it is for kids’ self-esteem (and later success) that they feel loved and valued by others around them!
