10 May More Motessori Myths

In a previous post, we took a look at some common myths associated with Montessori schools and debunked them so that you could have a clearer understanding of what Montessori programs have to offer your child. Here, we address and clarify more of those myths.

Myth: Montessori is just for preschool. 

Truth: Montessori schools range in age from infant and toddler through secondary (high school) levels. The Montessori Method was first envisioned by researching and observing children at all ages and across cultures to understand how they develop.

Maria Montessori came to the conclusion through her research that there are three stages of development experienced by children at roughly the same ages. Montessori schools may teach one or all of these stages. The Montessori Method of teaching, with its emphasis on self-direction and community, is impactful and relevant at all stages of development.

Myth: Montessori isn’t representative of the real world.

Truth: Montessori programs seek to create real-world learning environments.

Like in the real world, students at Montessori schools learn and work within multi-age classrooms. They are taught to be self-directed to succeed, and they learn to work independently and as a community to grow.

The focus is on students becoming actively engaged in their education. By doing this, Montessori educators hope to inspire the students to want to learn, as opposed to just learning the material required to pass a test.

Myth: Montessori children are not able to transition to traditional schools well.

Truth: Montessori children are able to more easily adapt to change. The lessons that they are taught in Montessori helps them to easily adjust to meeting new people. Although some have questioned the academic rigor, Montessori children have proven to out-test children in traditional schools.
