16 Nov Timely Social and Emotional Development Yields Lifelong Effects

Montessori education prepares students for the future by aiding in social and emotional development. A study published in 2015 by the American Journal of Public Health tested kindergarten-aged children for their level of social and emotional competency, and then followed up with the same children 13 to 19 years later. Results showed that those with strong social and emotional skills at kindergarten age were twice as likely to have obtained full-time jobs and college degrees as opposed to those who did not have those skills at a young age.

“A kindergarten measure of social-emotional skills may be useful for assessing whether children are at risk for deficits in noncognitive skills later in life and, thus, help identify those in need of early intervention. These results demonstrate the relevance of noncognitive skills in development for personal and public health outcomes,” said the 2015 study.

Children begin developing their personalities alongside their social and emotional skills from the time they are born.
