02 Mar National Read Across America Day!
Today is National Read Across America Day! This annual celebration, that motivates children to read, always falls on Dr. Seuss’ birthday (March 2nd). Dr. Seuss is a beloved children’s author; his books are enjoyed by both the young and the young at heart. Read more about the importance of reading to your child on our sister school- Sugar Mill Montessori’s blog.
Each year Read Across America highlights a Dr. Seuss book, this year it is Oh, The Places You’ll Go! For 25 years, this book has been inspiring young children, and college graduates alike.
Life lessons from the book:
- You decide your future – “you can steer yourself any direction you choose”
To know that you control your destiny is so powerful. Young children sometimes feel that the adults in their life are in control. However, we need to teach them to make decisions for themselves, be independent thinkers and take responsibility for their actions. - Make educated choices – “You’ll look up and down streets. Look ‘em over with care. About some you will say, ‘I don’t choose to go there.’”
Critical thinking, the ability to assess a situation and consider alternatives, is a useful skill. We can help our children learn to think before acting by asking open-ended questions. - There may be challenges – “hang-ups can happen to you”
It is important for children to understand that things won’t always be perfect, but that is ok. Through the challenges we face in life, we learn and grow. - Stay positive – “And when things start to happen, don’t worry. Don’t stew. Just go right along. You’ll start happening too.”
Learning to cope with difficult situations is an invaluable lesson. Studies have shown that people who are more positive live happier, healthier, longer lives. - Be flexible – “And remember that life’s a great balancing act. Just never forget to be dexterous and deft”
No one can predict what the future holds. In our ever-evolving world, it is important that we learn to accept change and be open to new ideas. - Dream it and Do it! – “Today is your day! Your mountain is waiting. So…get on your way!”
Children should be allowed to dream, and dream BIG! Every day, someone does something that was once considered “impossible”. The only person who can limit you is YOU!
